Black and white photograph of a bird-shaped sculpture set in tall grass and surrounded by dense trees. In this image, a sculpture resembling a large bird, likely a heron, stands amidst thick wild grass in front of a background filled with trees and undergrowth. The sculpture by Richard Saltonstall, 1990, is entitled “Big Bird” and is constructed with a long, curved neck and a pointed beak, with wings extended outward as if in mid-stride. The material and surface treatment give the sculpture a matte appearance, blending it into its natural surroundings. The bird is camouflaged against the busy pattern of grasses and branches around it. Geronimo Sculpture Garden, located in Hulls Cove, Maine. Save Outdoor Sculpture! (SOS!) (1990-1995) was a nationwide survey that ran from 1990-1995 documenting America’s outdoor sculpture. Established in 1990, SOS! helped educate local communities about America’s endangered sculptural heritage. The Maine Arts Commission was one of 106 organizations to participate in this survey.
