Description

Colored illustration of Indian Island from the shore of Old Town, Maine. The perspective is from near the ferry landing. Two male figures stand on the wharf where three canoes are hauled up. Nearby in the foreground, two male figures are working on a large, jumbled stack of lumber. Two women, a child, and male figure stand in the lower right corner of the image. Seven manned canoes dot the Penobscot River as well as a steam boat visible in the distance. A large U.S. flag, Christian cross and church structure dominate the skyline of Indian Island where several European style houses are visible. A caption below the illustration reads, "View of Oldtown, on the Penobscot River, Maine." The work is by Samuel Smith Kilburn, published in volume 20 of Gleason's Pictorial and Drawing-Room Companion, pg. 312, 1854, and made into a postcard. See NA2462.
