Description

Chocolate or brown print of the E.L. & E.J. Smart woods crew at Meadow Brook, Howland, Maine. The crew was operated by brothers Ernest Lester Smart and Elijah Johnston Smart. The photo includes two women and two children. The photo is taken next to the camp built of logs. There is snow on the ground. William D. Smart (1827-1907), standing, fourth man from the left, supports one of the children on top of a wooden table where he also half-sits. His left leg is missing at about mid-shin. Will Smart served with Company D. of the 30th Maine Volunteer Infantry and was wounded April 23, 1864 when crossing the Cane River, Louisiana in a canoe.
