Abstract/ Summary

After beginning 15-1-2 a year ago, the University of Maine men's ice hockey team had a disappointing finish to the 2002- 03 season, losing to Michigan in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Black Bears will use that memory to inspire them as they take the ice in 2003-04. The squad learned valuable lessons down the stretch last year and enter the season with a fire to prove that the first half of last year was not a fluke.

The Black Bears lost nine letterwinners from last year's squad, but return a solid nucleus at all three positions. In addition, Maine has 10 newcomers the coaching staff feels can make contributions immediately.

The Black Bears return one of the best goaltending tandems in the country in senior Frank Doyle and sophomore Jimmy Howard. Both Doyle and Howard saw their first collegiate action last season and far exceeded expectations of first-year netminders.
