Description
An image scanned from a black and white photograph published in 1895 with the caption, "Falls at Stillwater."
A very similar photograph appeared several years later in a 1918 thesis by Clarence Barrows Springer titled, An Investigation of Stillwater Plant No. 2 of the Orono Pulp and Paper Company. In the thesis, Springer describes the location of the plant as being "in Ward 5 of the city of Oldtown, a short distance from the car line where it turns at Stillwater corner. It is on the Stillwater River, a part of the Penobscot River, which flows around the island which contains part of Oldtown and a part of Orono." The photo caption used in the thesis is "Dam at Freshet Pitch" (p. 7).
