An image scanned from a black and white photograph with a handwritten caption on the back added by Maine author and folklorist Fannie Hardy Eckstorm that appears to read, "Lugging the Lady Emma - Sabao Carry. Note canvas canoe - must have been one of the earliest made - birch canoes were the vogue."
