Description
A black and white photograph in the Diana Forbes-Robertson collection on her aunt, Maxine Elliott, an internationally renowned actress born in Rockland, Maine in 1868.
Information printed at the bottom of the photograph appears to read F. or L. Forbes, the name of a photography studio, and 574 Fifth Avenue, New York. The back reads, "Maxine Elliott, The Prodigal Daughter. American Theatre, 1893. 'Virginia Fleetwood.'" The costume provides an example of a fashion trend popular at various times in the 19th and 20th centuries known as a wasp waist, a style produced by a corset and girdle.
