Abstract/ Summary

Scanned items from Ada Viola Smith (Peters) alumni file. Smith earned a BA in French from the University and was a member of the Class of 1927.

Smith has frequently been referred to as the first African American graduate of the University of Maine. However, while she may have been one of the earliest Black graduate (and even the earliest female Black graduate) there is evidence of earlier Black graduates (see Frederico Matheas item in this collection).

The items include a note regarding Smith's death (1995), correspondence regarding Smith's donation to the University of Maine (1978), inauguration of Harry Philpott as the president of Alabama University (1966), reunion questionnaire (1966), and Alumni Association dues (1951), and a biographical data (1923).

Comments
