Abstract/ Summary
This article discusses the term "patch cutting" in forestry, clarifying its definition and application within silviculture. It is important to differentiate between the ecological and silvicultural understanding of "patch" and "stand"; "patch cutting" alone lacks meaning as a silvicultural prescription without specifying the regeneration method. Examples like patch clearcutting, group selection cutting, and expanding-gap treatments from the Acadian Forest Ecosystem Research Program illustrate these important distinctions. While patch-based prescriptions and systems have value, it is crucial to define the regeneration method to effectively manage forests and achieve desired outcomes, focusing on regeneration dynamics rather than just harvesting patterns.
