Mark Gardner graduated from the University of Southern Maine in 1978 with a BSc in Industrial Technology and a minor in Education. Mark started in the paper industry with S.D Warren / Sappi in 1981 and held many positions within the company including Manufacturing and Research and Development at Westbrook Maine; Paper Mill Manager at the Somerset Mill in Maine; Managing Director in Muskegon, Michigan; VP of Engineering, VP Supply Chain and VP of Manufacturing at the corporate office in Boston, Massachusetts. In 2007, he was named President and Chief Executive Officer for Sappi North America. He retired in 2019.

Mark and his family are active supporters of the University of Southern Maine and the University of Maine for many years. Mark has also been a Trustee of the University of Maine System since 2012. In regards to the important role the Pulp and Paper Foundation plays in the State when establishing the Gardner Family Scholarship Fund he commented, “Having seen firsthand the many opportunities that come from the quality education that one can obtain from the University of Maine and the UMaine System, it is our pleasure to establish this scholarship in support of others who will continue to make significant contributions to the Pulp and Paper Industry here in Maine and abroad. The University of Maine Pulp and Paper Foundation is special and known around the world for preparing some of the best engineers in the industry.”
