Description

James G. Vamvakias graduated from the University of Maine in 1962 with a degree in Civil Engineering. He also earned a Fifth Year Certificate in Pulp and Paper Management.

Vamvarkias began his career with Rust Engineering in Pittsburgh but moved to join E.C . Jordan Company in Portland, ME in 1972 as a Vice President. His career with the company advanced as he became Executive Vice President and finally President. Under his guidance the company developed a strong emphasis in environmental improvement as well as pulp and paper process design.

Vamvarkias began serving on the UMaine Pulp and Paper Foundation service in 1975 when he was elected Educational Relations Committee Chair responsible for developing the Summer High School Juniors program and expanding the Engineering Career Exploration Seminars to serve 600 students annually. He was instrumental in soliciting one million dollars’ worth of engineering and construction services necessary for the installation of the pulp and paper pilot plant. In 1984 he was elected a Director-at-Large and served as Treasurer starting in 1986.
