Abstract/ Summary

Professor J. Barre Toelken, Director of the Folklore and Ethnic Studies Program at the University of Oregon, will deliver the Marshall Dodge Memorial Folklore Lecture Thursday, February 21, at 7:30 p.m. in 100 Nutting Hall on the University of Maine (Orono) campus. His topic will be "You've Got to Watch His Lips: Image and Meaning in American Indian Humor."

Barre Toelken is one of the most distinguished folklorists in the business. He's been President of the American Folklore Society, Editor of the Journal of American Folklore, Chairman of the Folk Arts Panel for the National Endowment for the Arts, and is on the Board of Trustees of the American Folklife Center of the Library of Congress. He is consultant on Native American folklore to the Smithsonian Institution and a consultant on culture maintenance for various American Indian tribes. For several years he lived with a Navajo family and was adopted by them. His book, The Dynamics of Folklore, is one of the best — and easily the most challenging — texts in the field.
