Description

Black and white photograph of a tall Civil War soldiers monument with a bronze soldier standing at parade rest atop a cylindrical granite column in front of the Pittsfield Public Library and trees. The photograph shows the Civil War soldiers monument in Pittsfield, Maine, dedicated on May 28, 1904, consisting of a bronze figure of a Union soldier mounted on a high, smooth pedestal of Hallowell granite set on a stepped base. The soldier stands at parade rest, wearing a long military coat and cap, both hands resting on the muzzle of his rifle, which stands upright between his feet, and his gaze is directed slightly downward. Below him, a decorative band of acanthus leaves encircles the top of the column, and just beneath it is a ring of bronze stars represents each state in the Union at the time of the war. The lower squared section of the pedestal carries four bronze ornaments on alternating faces: the Grand Army of the Republic badge, the Women’s Relief Corps badge, a stacked arrangement of muskets and swords with cartridge box and knapsack, and an anchor symbolizing the navy, while the date "1861–1865" is inscribed on the base. The monument, erected by the Tayntor Company of Hallowell, stands on a paved area near a bicycle rack, with mature trees and a multi-story brick and clapboard building with large arched windows in the background. 1994. Paul Faria, photographer. (See p17084-p17090)(NA4800.)
