Description
Black and white photograph of a painted utility pole standing on an embankment beside a rural road, with a house and leafless trees in the background. The photograph shows one of a series of five utility poles painted by 17 fourth grade students in October 1994 to represent the history of Whitefield, Maine. The lower half of the pole is painted in stacked horizontal bands of imagery. Near the top of the painted section are the words “WHITEFIELD/GRANGE/STARTED/1875” which appear above a train engine. The next band of imagery depicts a group of protestors holding signs. The subsequent four story bands depict images associated with the U.S. Civil War including a battlefield scene, a ring of Confederate flags, a band of marching soldiers, and a series of portraits above the words, “Civil War.” In the background is a portion of the Arlington Grange Hall. 1994. Unidentified, photographer. (See p17104-p17124)(NA4800.)
