Description
Black and white photograph of a large wooden sculpture of a young woman with dark hair propping herself up on her arms in a grassy clearing at the Langlais Art Preserve in Cushing, Maine. Back view of “Local Girl (#32)” by sculptor Bernard “Blackie” Langlais, created in 1970 from painted wood on a concrete foundation as a three-dimensional interpretation of the figure Christina Olson from Andrew N. Wyeth’s painting “Christina’s World”. The sculpture presents the woman seated on the ground with her legs extended beside her and her torso lifted, her body constructed from angular blocks that suggest a dress and shoulders, while round log-like arms brace her weight and end in heavy rectangular hands set on the ground. Her large, carved head, topped with dark painted hair pulled back, is turned slightly to one side, giving the impression that she is looking out across the field. The figure rests on a concrete pad within a grassy yard bordered by dense shrubs, with a weathered wooden outbuilding and additional outdoor sculptures visible in the distance. Located at the Langlais Art Preserve, the former home and studio property of Bernard and Helen Friend Langlais in Cushing, Maine. 1994. Unidentified, photographer.
