Description
Black and white photograph of a stone statue originally identified as a Korean scholar standing on a gravel-covered rooftop terrace. This piece may actually be a Muninseok, a statue of a civil official from the Joseon dynasty (1392 to 1910), often placed in pairs as tomb guardians. The photograph shows a single upright stone sculpture of a robed Korean male in three-quarter view, positioned on a gravel-covered rooftop with a modern building wall and windows behind it. The figure sits or stands rigidly upright with both hands held together at chest level. The facial features are placid, the shoulders rounded. The long robe falls in folds to a rectangular base. The background suggesting an urban setting. Original provenance indicates the sculptures originate in Kyonggi-Do Province, Korea, dating from about 1400 to 1960 when they were removed by Dr. Sinder. They were donated in 1980 as a gift to the people of Portland by Leon and Mary Sinder in esteem for Peter and Terry Greer. Portland, Maine. 1994. Unidentified, photographer.
