Description
Black and white photograph of a zigzagging concrete wall rising and falling in front of planted earth mounds and small evergreen trees on a college campus. The photograph shows the front view of “8 Waves,” a landscape artwork by landscape architect Robert C. Hoover, Fall 1992-Spring 1993, where eight parallel, wave-like ridges of shaped and planted earth run alongside a paved walkway at Northern Maine Technical College, Presque Isle, Maine. Along the near edge, a continuous concrete retaining wall follows the exact contour of the waves, forming a repeated series of smooth triangular peaks and troughs that echo the rising and falling mounds behind it. Arborvitae evergreens are planted along the crest line of the earth waves, their vertical forms punctuating the horizontal flow of the ridges and connecting the wall visually to the planted berms. In the background, low brick campus buildings, light poles, and a distant water tower situate the earthwork within the broader institutional landscape. 1994. Unidentified, photographer. (See p17054-p17059)(NA4800.)
