Description
Color photograph of a stone sculpture carved in relief with the image of a stylized porcupine, installed outdoors near a building. The image shows one of the stones from "Mascots and Talismen," a 1992 sculpture by Carole Hanson located at SAD #63 [Regional School Unit 63] in East Holden, Maine. The work is carved from Maine bluestone and features a relief image of a porcupine walking along the bottom edge of the irregularly shaped boulder. The animal’s rounded body, legs, and head are simplified into smooth, incised forms, while its quills fan out broadly across the left side of the stone as long, radiating grooves. The stone rests on a grassy area, and a light-colored, vertically paneled building wall fills the background. The full sculpture consists of four carved stones, but only this porcupine stone is visible in the photograph. 1994. Unidentified photographer. (See p16924-p16937, p16948-p16952)(NA4800.)
