Description
Color photograph of a large stone sculpture carved in relief with the image of a stylized moose, situated beside a school playground. The image shows one of the stones from "Mascots and Talismen," a 1992 sculpture by Carole Hanson located at SAD #63 [Regional School Unit 63] in East Holden, Maine. The work is carved from Maine bluestone and features a relief image of a moose in profile along the lower front face of the boulder, with a long snout and large eye. The moose’s broad antlers spread upward across the upper portion of the stone, while the smooth carved surface of the animal contrasts with the surrounding rough rock. The boulder stands on a patch of grass in front of a playground structure made of metal posts, platforms, and a spiral slide, with trees and open sky in the background. The stone is signed “CH92” near the bottom at the rear. The full installation contains four carved stones, although only this moose stone is visible in the photograph. 1994. Unidentified photographer. (See p16924-p16937, p16948-p16952)(NA4800.)
