Description
Black and white photograph of the exterior of Academy Hill School, Wilton, Maine. The brick structure, built in the Colonial Revival style with a bell tower and cupola, was dedicated in 1982, replacing historic Wilton Academy which was destroyed by fire, May 10-11, 1980. As an important landmark and central hub of the Wilton community, destruction of the Academy was traumatic, described by journalist Ruth Adamo, as the "Death of an Eagle" in reference to the beloved weathervane destroyed in the fire. Fundraising to rebuild the school began in November 1980 and Academy Hill School opened in 1982. Architecture of the new building incorporated the clock tower and cupola topped by a replica of the original eagle weathervane. The rebuilding committee commissioned Tenants Harbor sculptor Ron Cross, to create the replica which, with a 40-inch wing span utilizes 95 pounds of copper, bronze and stainless steel. 1994.
