Description
Black and white photograph of an American Civil War monument in Ellsworth, Maine, consisting of a tall column topped with a statue of a Union soldier and flanked by two cannons, located in a grassy area with trees and a house in the background. The photograph shows a granite monument set on a base, with a vertically rising column crowned by a statue of a soldier standing at rest, holding a rifle. Two cannons are positioned on either side at the base of the monument, and a small pyramid of cannonballs sits in the center. The monument honors the men of Ellsworth who served and commemorates those who died during the Civil War. It was constructed of Blue Hill granite by the firm Dunn & Howard of Ellsworth, funded by local citizens, and was dedicated on July 4, 1887. The principal inscription reads: "In honor of the Men / of / Ellsworth / Who Served and to the / Memory of those who fell on land and sea / In the War for the Union / Their Grateful Townsmen Have Raised This Memorial / 1861 - 1887". 1994. Jill Linzee, photograph. (See p16227-p16230.) (See NA4800.)
