Description
Black and white photograph of a group of three women and one man standing in the front yard of a house in Veazie, Maine, 1880 - 1905. Front matter: "McPheters home on Oak hill. Vesta Welch." Back matter: "Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a bright New Year. Vesta to Clara." Vesta Welch (1862-1943) was the daughter of Gilman (1831-1911) and Ellen (Patterson) Welch (1839-1914). According to her February 20, 1943 obituary, Welch was "a native and lifelong resident of Veazie[.] [She] was a well known dressmaker...She was an active member of the Congregational church. Though the handwritten note on the front of the card indicates "McPheters house on Oak Hill," the McPheters lived on State Street. The Gilman Welch home was located on Oak Street where Vesta lived until the death of her parents. Negative no. 73.2.2. Source: Beulah Hodgeman. See also p01870.
