Description

Black and white photo of chestnut mare pacer Maurenewood driven by T. Bunch to victory in three out of four heats in a time of 2.09 in the 2.15 Class Pace at the 52nd Annual Rochester Fair at Cold Spring Park, Rochester, N.H., Wednesday, May 28, 1927. The horse War Dance, wearing saddle number six, driven by J. Nevell is also visible in the background.

Maurenewood's tack includes a shadow roll to obscure shadows on the track from the horse's line of vision and a headpole to maintain the horse's straightline when pacing. Also of note are the hopples used to help the horse maintain her gait by keeping both legs on the same side moving together in rhythm.
