Abstract
Race program for the Wednesday, October 9, 1935, Topsham Fair pari-mutuel races in Topsham, Maine. The race card includes photographer Guy Kendall's handwritten notes for changes in the race field, as well as race finishes and times. Kendall also recorded a tally of race payouts for the day.
Kendall noted that Henry Clukey, driving Lochinvar set the new track record in the third race of the day in a time of 2.05 1/4.
Kendall did not, however, make note of an accident in the fourth race that injured three drivers. An account of the incident was reported in the weekly Bath Independent:
"A serious accident marred the racing program, when in the fourth race four horses piled up with their drivers, including Miss Vergery Carson, New England's only women driver who suffered a couple broken ribs and lacerations about the head. The pile-up occurred when Zymri, driven by Bill Donnelly and in the lead, stumbled and fell. Viking, driven by Colburn; Gilded Braden, driven by Miss Carson and Senator Superb, driven by Knights, all smashed Into the Donnelly rig, Donnelly was tossed 30 feet and suffered chest and head injuries while Colburn escaped with a bruised hip. Knights was uninjured. It was necessary to shoot Viking as the horse sustained a broken ankle."
