Abstract/ Summary

Personal diary of Chandler M. Jewett, who was later captain of many Georgetown (Me.) vessels, but was just a seaman in 1862. The entries here cover only the period when Jewett fished aboard the Schooner Fairy Forest out of Westport (Me.), including a brief time when he was in command of her. Records fishing journeys along the nearby coast as well as Shelburne (Nova Scotia), Bank Orphan, and Prince Edward Bank. Daily entries contain much reference to personal activities, such as hunting and attending sermons, as well as life aboard the ship, including weather and some mention of catch, primarily cod and mackerel. Each entry ends with a notation of the anniversary of an historical event or the birth or death of an historical figure on that day.
