Description

The University of Maine's Student Women's Association was founded circa 1997, as a progressive, feminist student organization open to all women. The purpose of SWA was to improve the climate on campus for all women. Their programs included rape awareness programs, yoga classes, gay rights activism, pro-choice activism, and the Beautiful Project which stressed the inner beauty of women. The SWA were located in the Women's Resource Center in 101 Fernald Hall. Willow Wetherall was coordinator for SWA in the late 1990s.

The record group contains material created and curated by members of the University of Maine Student Women's Association (SWA). This includes clippings from the Maine Campus student newspaper and other publications regarding SWA and subjects of interest to members; printed copies of email correspondence regarding articles in the Maine Campus and FirstClass [email] posts; material from the Abortion Access Project; and publicity material for events organized by SWA and of interest to the group on campus.

The records also contain copies of Student Women's Association zines and posters and programs for the annual performances of the Vagina Monologues, Beautiful Project, and Take Back the Night events organized by SWA on campus. There are also copies of scripts from short plays from the Out of Silence: Abortion Stories from the 1 in 3 Campaign, an undated constitution for SWA, and pro-choice badges.
