Description
Art critic, freelance writer, and poet Carl Little, who lives in Somesville, Mount Desert Island, Maine, was born in New York City. He received his B.A. from Dartmouth College, his M.F.A. from Columbia University, and a master's from Middlebury College. He is Director of Communications and Marketing for the Maine Community Foundation.
The collection of Carl Little's papers includes correspondence related to his work and personal relationships with artists of Maine. The correspondence series ranges from printed emails organizing curated shows and art books, arranging interviews, and thank-you notes from artists for his reviews of their work. Carl Little gave many lectures and organized educational events relating to the art history of Maine. Primarily, the collection is comprised of the series "Artist Files" which were his files for the many individual artists he worked with over his career as a reviewer, writer, curator, and lecturer. Carl Little contributed to and wrote many of his own books centered around Maine art, with his most prominent being "The Art of Maine in Winter". He had a deep connection with the artist's colony on Monhegan Island, which is known for its role in Maine art history. Correspondence and information on Monhegan Island, specifically with the Monhegan Artists Residency Corporation (MARC), is included in the "Monhegan" series. The scope of the Carl Little collection extends from his personal correspondence with some of Maine's most prominent contemporary artists, to notes taken through the writing of several of his books.
