An Ecologist's World: Seashores, Forests, Lakes, Mountaintops, Peatlands, and Prehistoric Landscapes
Files
Description
In this scientific memoir, the author shares with the reader a diverse series of educational, scientific, and environmental adventures that comprise his world as an ecologist. In doing so, the author describes the seashore, forest, lake, mountaintop, and peatland ecosystems where the adventures took place. Most of the ecosystems were in northern New England, but others were widely distributed in eastern North America and overseas. The first few chapters of this 21-chapter volume describe the formative experiences that prepared the author for the profession, what it was like to be a teacher of ecology, and how he engaged students in ecological field studies. Some of the subsequent chapters are about obtaining cores of sediment from the bottom of lakes and studying their contents to infer the history of lake acidification and changes in ancient vegetation and regional landscapes. Other chapters explain how the author produced ecological descriptions of forests, lakes, and peatlands, enabling assessment of future changes in them. Additional chapters describe how he used his knowledge to protect a major natural area and to educate the public. The book is abundantly illustrated with the author’s photos and charts. Taken together, these portrayals enable the reader to vicariously experience what it is like to be an ecologist.
