Us and Them: An Oral History of Life on the Summer Estates in Coastal Hancock County, Maine

Pamela E. Dean, University of Maine

Abstract

This is an oral history of a way of life which is surely an anachronism, a piece of the past which continues in many ways unchanged today. It is a history of the daily lives and interactions of the people who spend their summers on estates on the coast of Maine and of their hosts and employees, the native Mainers. The period covered stretches back to the 1880s, to the earliest childhood memories of some informants, now dead, and to others' recollections of stories of the lives of their parents. It also reaches to the present, to the natives who still work for the summer people as their fathers did, and to the summer people who are now year-round residents in what was once their family’s second or third or even fourth home.
