Abstract

In measure theory we are introduced to the Carathéodory definition of measurability without much motivation for the definition, nor do we get an understanding of how the definition was derived. In calculating the outer measure of sets under ergodic measure preserving transformations we see that Carathéodory's definition seems to naturally arise.
