Project Abstract/ Summary
The University of Maine Humanities Initiative IUMHI] seeks funding to support a keynote.lecture that will be part of its series of lectures and seminars in Spring 2012 that will be offered under the broad theme of "The Contemporary Role of the Humanities." Focal points for this keynote lecture include the relationship between the humanities as they are understood by practitioners in the academic community and by the community at large in Maine, the region, and globally. The UMHI Advisory Committee invited an internationally recognized scholar to offer a public presentation on the current state of the humanities with a particular emphasis on the humanities at land grant institutions such as the University of Maine. The Spring 20l2 program has been designed to initiate some of the goals of the recently created UMHI and provide sustainable models for collaboration among University of Maine faculty, students and the community to enhance the presence of the humanities.
