Abstract/ Summary
Join us for a presentation with Dr. Amber Hickey, Visiting Scholar at the University of Maine and Assistant Professor of Art History at the University of Tennessee – Chattanooga. Dr. Hickey will be presenting research from their book, Visualities of Radical Care: Decolonial Art and Activism Beyond the Necrocene. The book situates practices of radical care as central to decolonial art and activism and proposes a methodology for discerning and amplifying such acts. Following other scholars such as Walia, Estes, Yazzie, Hobart, Kneese, and Spade, who have noted the ways in which reproductive labor and care are so often overlooked and undervalued, Hickey argues that practices of radical care are what makes these movements and the images that emerge from them possible. These are acts of care that protect and sustain communities during and despite the Necrocene, while paving the way toward a post-apocalyptic future that includes a complete transformation of dominant modes of relating to land, water, and people.
