An image scanned from a black and white photograph of Joseph Attien. Attien, sometimes spelled Aitteon or Attean, was a Wabanaki chief and one of Henry David Thoreau's Maine guides. His death in a lumber-related accident forms part of a chapter in Fannie Hardy Eckstorm's 1904 book, Penobscot Man.
