Abstract/ Summary

This guide to intentional native landscaping of cemeteries in Maine explores the ecological benefits of using native plants in these spaces, highlighting how they provide habitat and support biodiversity. It discusses how cemeteries can be surprising wildlife resources and details various species that can thrive in them. The guide also covers practical considerations like mowing regimes, invasive plant management, planting new species based on site conditions, and the importance of public engagement through signage. It also introduces the Constellation of Living Memorials as an organization supporting these efforts. This guide is tailored to cemeteries in the state of Maine and was produced as a collaborative project between the University of Maine, Constellation of Living Memorials, Southern Aroostook Soil & Water Conservation District, and Piscataquis County Soil & Water Conservation District.
