Abstract/ Summary
This report provides an updated analysis of the economic contribution of snowmobiling to Maine's economy for the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons, building on the 2020 report for the 2018-19 season. Using adjusted spending profiles for resident and non-resident snowmobilers from 2018-19, inflation-adjusted to 2024 dollars, we estimate a total economic contribution of $710 million for the 2022-23 season and $582 million for the 2023-24 season. The decline of $128 million in 2023-24 reflects a significant decrease in registered snowmobiles, compounded by poor winter conditions that likely reduced both trip and non-trip spending. While registration compliance remains high, the current assumptions and methods may be underestimated. A comprehensive update to spending profiles is recommended for the 2028-29 season to capture long-term changes influenced by the pandemic, climate change, and tourism behavior.
