Description
Black and white photograph of three abstract steel sculptures on circular concrete bases in a grassy area overlooking parking lots, low buildings, and distant hills. The photograph shows “Piston,” a sculpture by Walter Easton, 1983, consisting of two tall vertical steel forms and a smaller circular element, each mounted on round concrete pads at Northern Maine Technical College, Presque Isle, Maine. The two large pieces stand side by side, their silhouettes resembling stylized mechanical components. Each form has a broad lower section that narrows into a central shaft and then flares outward into a T-shaped crossbar at the top, with rounded protrusions and notched edges along the shaft. Between them and slightly in front is a shorter post topped by a circular disc. When viewed from a certain angle, the three pieces create the silhouette of an internal combustion engine piston, though in this view they appear as separate abstract forms. The setting includes paved parking areas, industrial-style buildings, and rolling hills. 1994. Unidentified, photographer. (See p17047-p17053)(NA4800.)
