The contest kicked off the day of racing at the One Mile Kite Track at Old Orchard Beach, Maine, on Friday, July 19, 1940. Wearing saddle number four, Hollyrood Darrell, E. Jones up, finished the heat in second place followed by Peter McKinney, E. Avery up, showing in third.
