Abstract

The official race program for the Saturday, Sept. 16, 1939 Oxford County Agricultural Society harness races in South Paris, Maine. The cover of the program includes the names of race day officials as well as a summary of the field of horses participating in the first and second halves of the Daily Double. The program include Guy Kendall's handwritten notes on changes in race line ups, finish times, and order. Kendall noted that he left the event following the 12th Race of the day.

The program also advertises, "Butler Head Numbers Used Here." Butler Head Numbers were conceived by Jim Butler, of Lewiston, Maine, who started in the harness racing industry as a timekeeper and water boy at the Bangor race track in the 1890s. Butler owned horses and served as race secretary for the Maine State Fair in the 1920s.
