Description

The Student Heritage Alliance (SHAC) was originally founded in 1996 with a mission to provide students of all cultures and backgrounds a place where a sense of community is shared. SHAC was first located in the lower level of Cumberland Hall, but went on to relocate to the 3rd floor of Hannibal Hamlin Hall, also known as the ALANA Center (African, Latino-a, Asian, and Native American) which was founded in 1999. In 2004, SHAC went through a reorganization following a decline in participation. While SHAC would continue operating into the 2010s, by 2021 SHAC faced further challenges that resulted in the group no longer functioning and the General Student Senate's Multicultural Affairs Committee examining and updating SHAC's constitution and bylaws. In the fall of 2023 SHAC officially returned as an advisory board for several multicultural and multi-faith organizations on campus. SHAC acts as an umbrella-organization, facilitating discussion between the myriad of diverse groups on the University of Maine campus. Membership in SHAC is limited to the officers of SHAC (the executive board) and representative members of each organization represented within SHAC.
