Abstract

This thesis contains a preface, a play and a postface. The preface introduces the major influences on my creative process in my studies, my research and my personal life. It then shows how my ideas developed into a play. The preface addresses why metaphysical theatre and the Theatre of the Absurd were so interesting to me and how they influenced my writing, why I chose to research Samuel Beckett, Eugène Ionesco and Arthur Adamov and why I chose to write in French. The preface, then, introduces the play. The play Un Morceau de craie blanche is a critique of language teaching and learning in the United States. It presents a serious problem in the education system in which the number of students enrolled in language classes is quickly declining and, as a result, these languages and language courses offered are disappearing. The play focuses on the issues within the classroom through the point of view of the two students, but also addresses the problem in its entirety in a monologue of the professor. Throughout the play, I present the absurdity of this situation, which I criticize and aim to change. The postface examines the Theatre of the Absurd and draws links between the works of Beckett, Ionesco and Adamov and my own play. It introduces the principal themes and elements that characterize the Theatre of the Absurd while focusing on the structure, the language and the organization of time in specific works. The postface provides specific examples from plays that influenced my own structure, language and concept of time, establishing similarities and differences between the Theatre of the Absurd and my own work. The lack of a rigid definition of the Theatre of the Absurd gave me the necessary liberty to focus on the absurd situation in my own play.
