Abstract/ Summary

This dataset is a text-based spreadsheet documenting the 124 objects selected for display in the Bowdoin College Museum of Art bicentennial exhibition At First Light: Two Centuries of Artists in Maine, originally scheduled for 2020 but moved to 2022. The data includes the makers’ names, titles or descriptors for the objects, what materials they are made of, and dates of manufacture and owner, along with delimited text values indicating the type of object (painting, sculpture, etc.), whether it was borrowed, connections to municipalities and regions in Maine, the gender and ethnicity of the maker, the subject matter to which it relates, and whether it was ultimately displayed in 2022. Color coding indicates works that were omitted between 2020 and 2022 (blue) and those that were added in 2022 (orange). The data derives primarily from two exhibition checklists (2020 and 2022) supplied by the Bowdoin College Museum of Art; information about object type, maker gender and heritage, and geographical distribution were assigned by the author.

For an expanded dataset including objects displayed in five different bicentennial exhibitions, see Routhier, Jessica Skwire, "The Stuff of Statehood: Public Exhibitions and Public Memory in the Bicentennial Year" (2025). Research Datasets. 2.
