Abstract/ Summary
The history of Maine's Forest Practices Act (FPA) and its provisions are reviewed. This act began in 1991 and has regulated clearcutting in Maine since then. Clearcuts are defined as any contiguous harvest area over 5 acres that has less than 30 square feet of basal area of merchantable trees, without adequate stocking of tall advance regeneration. After passage, clearcuts became smaller and less numerous, replaced by various forms of partial harvesting. [Note: this was last updated in 2019, and may not reflect any regulatory changes since then.]
