Following World War II, the federal G.I. Bill enabled approximately 2.3 million, predominantly white male Veterans to receive a post-secondary education. In addition to covering tuition costs, Veterans received a "subsistence" stipend to cover the cost of housing and other expenses. To accommodate increased enrollment, between 1947 and 1949, UMaine operated an annex campus located on the Brunswick Naval Air Station where Veterans could enroll in first-year courses before moving to the Orono campus to complete their education. Five hundred and five male Veterans enrolled for classes on the Brunswick campus in fall 1947.

The Maine Annex was published by the students of the University of Maine at the Brunswick Campus, starting January 10, 1947. The tabloid paper started with a four-page spread, expanding as advertising increased. The final issue of spring 1947 included an assessment of the Brunswick Annex as filling students with "grave doubts" as they arrived to drab Navy-gray buildings, air strips, and "the sounds of taps and reveille," surroundings that failed to inspire war-weary young Veterans.
