The General Alumni Association began publishing The Maine Alumnus in 1919. The first Managing Editor, Wayland D. Towner, hoped to provide a free publication for all former students, improving communication with an ever-growing group of active alumni/ae. This collection begins with the earliest issues highlighting campus activities, legislative efforts, athletic events, and the accomplishments of graduates of more than 100 years ago.

The publication evolved and changed titles over time, later known simply as Maine (1990-2001) and more recently as Maine Alumni Magazine. The most recent issues of Maine Alumni Magazine are available online through the efforts of the UMaine Alumni Association.

This digital collection was a collaborative effort of Fogler Library's Circulation Department, Dean's Office, and Special Collections.
