The General Alumni Association of the University of Maine had grown steadily since its founding in 1875, so it is little wonder that when The Maine Alumnus first appeared in 1919, the magazine became an important way to communicate with an ever-growing group of active alumni/ae. In addition to the six-member General Association, there were eleven individuals serving as Alumni Council Members at Large, additional members representing the Colleges of Law, Arts and Sciences, Agriculture, and Technology, a representative to the Board of Trustees, and 27 active local associations throughout Maine, the United States, and Canada.
Wayland D. Towner, having graduated just five years earlier, served as the first Managing Editor of the publication with a goal of providing a free publication for all former students of the University of Maine. This digital collection begins with the earliest issues that highlight campus activities, legislative efforts, athletic events, and the accomplishments of graduates of nearly 100 years ago.
The Maine Alumnus evolved and changed titles over time, later known simply as Maine (1990-2001) and more recently as Maine Alumni Magazine. Scanning of all of these issues will be ongoing. The most recent issues of Maine Alumni Magazine are also available online through the efforts of the UMaine Alumni Association.
