Abstract/ Summary

In October of 1954, three years prior to Sputnik, the University of Maine opened the ninth university planetarium in the United States. It started as a facility for teaching astronomy to university students but rapidly expanded to serve the community offering K-12 school visits and public performances. As of the end of October 2024 we reached 1 million visitors in our 70-year history and inspired countless people to explore their universe in new ways. Our programs have expanded into numerous areas beyond astronomy, highlighting science, art, music, theater and culture. Learn more about our history inside this issue.
