Aims & Scope
The purpose of The Catch is to recognize, celebrate, and honor the maritime culture of eastern Maine through contemporary creative writing. As artists, writers help communities to remember their past so that they may understand the present and prepare for the future. This collective memory is important to maintaining the resilience of coastal communities, especially in areas like Downeast Maine.
The rich natural resources of the Gulf of Maine and Northwest Atlantic have sustained Downeast communities for millennia. It is our hope that the 45 sites along the Downeast Fisheries Trail will encourage writers who live in the region to consider fishing and aquaculture in their communities. We also hope that writers who live elsewhere will travel to the region to be inspired by the magnificent coastline, dynamic tidal bays and rivers, and working waterfronts.
