Description
Black and white photo of Darkey Grattan wearing number 12 as he crosses the finish line in second place in the first heat of the 2.12 Class Pace at the Bay State Circuit at Sage Park, Windsor, Connecticut on July 1, 1931. Kendall's handwritten note in the race score card indicates that Lyman Brusie is in the driver's seat.
Note the Ford truck marked "Radio" visible in the background, parked between the judges stand and grandstand. Two large, horn speakers are visible mounted on the roof of the truck with a wire running to the judges stand marking the truck as the first race track public address announcement system captured on film by Guy Kendall.
