Abstract

“Re-Awake: Seven Stories” consists of seven “fairytales” I have reimagined and rewritten, in an attempt to explore the ways in which fairytale tropes shape us as surely as they are shaped by us. Through my stories I address issues of gender and class and cultural assumptions, bringing readers’ attention to some of the ideas embedded in our culture and the ways in which traditional narratives can reinforce or undermine our determined “selves.” In my Critical Introduction I discuss some of the literary scholars and fiction writers who have influenced my work.
