Description
In June 1965 the UM Board of Trustees voted to confer the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws on Ira C. Darling. In a letter to President Elliot thanking him for the honor Mr. Darling wrote, “With your acquisition of my property in Maine and the prospects of what you hope to accomplish, I feel very much a part of the University and look forward to your accomplishments.” Unable to make the trip to the University of Maine that summer because of continuing health problems, President Elliott travelled to Kenilworth, Illinois, and on September 9, 1965 at high noon in the Darling’s flower garden conferred upon Mr. Darling the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws (LL. D). About 15 people attended the ceremony including family members and a few close friends.
